I got a haircut(long hair) here, typical washing, cutting, styling. The haircut itself was good and they were attentive. The other parts of it I wasn’t the biggest fan of. The washing was really quick, and my stylist used the barest of pressure when washing my hair. I left with my scalp still itchy. Then, my stylist didn’t ask how I wanted my hair styled and said we were done. When I didn’t realize that, and asked if I could get my now shorter but still past the shoulder length hair curled, he was very reticent. TLDR: cut was good, experience, not so much
The hair washing experience was very thorough and they did a great job at really getting deep into my thick hair. What I didn't like was the vision they had for my hair was different and cut shorter than what I wanted but that's okay. Blow drying and the blow out was too long and made my hair too big. The hair stylist kept grooming themselves as they were giving the haircut which was a bit distracting. Make sure to bring cash for tip.
Tomoko is a magician and I appreciated her skill for layering my thick wiry hair. She did an amazing blow out and treatment which sadly I could never replicate, but I was still happy with the results after the dreaded post cut wash. She uses hair products imported from Japan and they've worked well so far. I appreciate the fair pricing of the cuts here and hope to come back as a regular for many years to come.
Omae was a really good hairdresser! She was gentle, attentive, and gave me exactly what I asked for. The salon was clean. I cut off 5 inches and paid $81 for the haircut - not a bad price for NYC when I'm so particular about my hairstyle. I'm absolutely visiting again. Before and after photos attached.
I got my hair cut from Tomoko herself. She is a wonderful hair cutter and a lovely person. It was my first time going to this salon and I loved it. We talked about Mitsuwa market and various other things. She is very kind and the 4th Street salon is beautiful and elegant. I received a perfect bob haircut. She helped me figure out how to cut it to achieve my desired style. I look so fancy! I think she is the best at blow drying. My hair looks so pretty- bouncy and straight at once. Thank you Tomoko! Great tea too.
Staff are really nice and offers tea while you get your hair done. However, I didn't really like the hairstyle they gave me. Although we discussed the length, they cut my hair too short. While blowdrying my hair after the haircut, they didn't seem to use any heat protectant and my hair ended up more damaged than it was before the haircut which I was quite upset about. Also, while they were brushing my hair, the hair stylist started brushing his own hair with the same brush randomly, then went back to brushing mine. I felt like that was really weird and possibly unsanitary. The price was also very high and the price they gave me was actually higher than the range of a normal haircut that is written on their prices chart.
I came here with high recommendations from a Reddit group. The woman who cut my hair today was so nice, but it’s the worst haircut I’ve ever had. She cut it shorter than I asked, and she took about 5-10min of cutting total. It’s uneven and I will be going elsewhere to get it fixed. She didn’t use any products - no leave in or heat protectant. I’m devastated with the outcome and angry for the lack of attention to detail. I paid 146 + tip. Very disappointing.
I’ve come here a few times in the past for hair cuts - 5 stars always. Today I got a haircut from a different stylist, and the cut looked great until she used scissors to thin out my hair after blow drying. I'm not a big fan of hair thinning as I prefer volume, so it would be good practice for stylists to confirm beforehand. Other than that, a precise cut and very kind people who work there.
Very nice haircut. I got mine done by Takeshi. Exactly what I hoped for. Great service and great price!
Thanks for giving me the perfect short hair I could ask for, Takeshi! It’s hard to find a good hairdresser that knows the nuanced differences between Asian hair types, and the salon really listens to the aesthetics that people are looking for. It’s also a beautiful and clean place.
I had a good haircut from Omae-san and she was very friendly, as were the other staff at the salon. No doubt about her skillset, and I appreciated the many suggestions she provided to address my hair concerns. When I go to a Japanese hair …
My hair isnt thick and rather fine so ive never had any hair stylist spend more than 25 minutes cutting my hair! Takashi-san who was my hair stylist spent a whole hour, checking with me about the length and asking if i like it etc. i can …
Came back again after two years, really great experience again! The hairdresser will listen and follow your style and give suggestions before making any changes or cuts. Would recommend.
I just had a very lovely experience with Akiko. It was my first time at this salon which is very clean and low key. Akiko did a great job listening to what I wanted and executing very efficiently. I definitely recommend her and this salon overall. I will be back :)
Tomoko and her team are simply the best! Their meticulous attention to detail, talent, and kindness are truly remarkable. The quality of their work is unmatched, especially considering the reasonable prices. Even a basic wash and cut leaves me feeling absolutely pampered and revitalized. I cannot recommend Sei Tomoko highly enough!
Best haircut I've ever received! I went from super long hair to super short hair. They know exactly what they're doing. Super kind with washing and making sure you get the haircut you want.
Akiko and Sei deliver time and time again!!! Men's cut is $60 and well worth it. The care and precision scissors work can't be matched. Anytime I'm back in NYC, a visit to Akiko is always a priority.
Accept no substitutes. Nothing comes close to this. Used to go in the 2000s, then went to Japan, now back... Still exceptional. 2024 Update: still exceptional. Update 2025: still excellent 20 years later.
Have gone here for over a decade, and have never been unhappy with a cut. Great price for consistently quality service
So relaxing I almost fell asleep a few times
